For ACGPUBS we built a complete publishing platform for multiple scientific journals: automated article ingest, Crossref DOI registration, scholarly SEO and an editorial panel that works without technical knowledge. Below you can read which problem it solves and how we built it.

The problem

Why SEO keeps breaking down

ACGPUBS publishes multiple scientific journals, with articles going back twenty years. That content sat in an old system that no longer met the bar: pages were slow, publishing a new issue was manual work, DOI registration at Crossref happened separately from the content, and findability in Google Scholar and search engines left much to be desired.

The editorial team wanted one platform where multiple journals live together, where issues and articles are manageable without technical knowledge, and where every new article automatically gets its DOI and is found as well as possible.

An old system with slow pages and journals that each had to be maintained separately

Publishing new issues was manual work with loose files and hand typed metadata

DOI registration at Crossref ran separately from the content and regularly slipped through

Older articles missed publication dates, making citations and indexing unreliable

Search engines and Google Scholar got too little out of the existing content

The solution

What we built

We built a complete publishing platform for multiple scientific journals: a headless CMS for the editorial team with a fast public site around it, from journal homepage to full text article. All content from the old system was migrated, with articles going back some twenty years.

The core is automation of everything that used to be manual: articles arrive through an integration API, volumes and issues are created automatically, authors are recognised through ORCID and ROR and every new article is registered at Crossref immediately.

Multiple journals on one platform

Every journal gets its own homepage with impact factor, CiteScore and editorial board, in its own accent colour, while volumes, issues and articles are managed centrally. One editorial team never notices the other.

Automated article ingest

Articles arrive through an API with a zip of files. The system recognises the journal, creates missing volumes and issues, resolves authors through ORCID and ROR and stores pdf, html and images. Seconds later the article is live.

Crossref and DOI fully automated

On arrival a correct Crossref deposit is generated and submitted, per article or per whole issue. ORCIDs are checked in advance against the official checksum algorithm, so faulty references never go out the door.

DOI health scanner

A scanner goes through the entire catalogue: is the DOI format right, does it resolve at doi.org, is it registered at Crossref and does it point to the right page. Errors land on a list instead of going unnoticed for years.

Scholarly SEO

Every article page carries the full Highwire Press citation metadata for Google Scholar, plus ScholarlyArticle structured data, Open Graph and a dynamic sitemap covering thousands of articles. RSS feeds per journal keep indexes and subscribers up to date.

Reading experience per article

Full text in html with an automatically generated table of contents, pdf and xml download, citation export in BibTeX and RIS, share buttons and view and download counters. Authors get their own public profile page with their articles and ORCID.

Editorial panel for non technicians

Tiptap word processing for abstracts and policy pages, authors sorted by dragging, editorial teams and advisory boards per journal, eleven fixed policy page types and downloadable manuscript templates. Every change lands in the activity log.

From 50 MB to 50 KB per page load

A journal homepage used to load a complete five level database tree, often tens of megabytes. After our rebuild with light, targeted endpoints and database level counters it is under 50 kilobytes. A thousand times lighter, noticeably faster.

Advertisements and subscribers

Ad placements with rotation and targeting per journal, tracking impressions and clicks. Visitors can subscribe per journal to email updates on new issues.

“We used to publish an issue and hope everything checked out: the DOIs, the dates, the findability. Now I hand over a zip and see the article live minutes later, properly registered and findable. The scanner also finds errors in old articles we had been sitting next to for years.”
